We always go see the volcano at least once each trip. While
pricey, the air tours are the best way to see the Volcano at
work. If you want to see the lava from the top of the mountain,
definitely put in a call to the Ranger's office to check the
weather conditions. There is nothing more dissatisfying than
driving three hours to see a bunch of misty clouds.
Far more interesting, yet frequently closed, is southern
drive to the lava entering the sea. Along the way, you can see
single house mysteriously spared from the destruction. If you
can arrive at sunset, you will be able to see the glowing lava
disappear into the ocean amidst a tower of steam.
